SUVA, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Fiji will never allow same sex marriages for as long as the FijiFirst government is ruling the island nation.

Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama made the remarks while opening the Raralevu Subdivision in Tailevu, one of the 14 provinces on Viti Levu, the largest island of Fiji on Monday.

According to Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC), Bainimarama said there has been a lot of talks on social media regarding the issue and rumors are speculating that some churches are supporting the idea of same-sex marriage.

Bainimarama said it must be clear to everyone that Fiji is a God fearing country and same-sex marriage will never happen in Fiji.

Despite an increased awareness on human rights on same-sex marriage, Bainimarama said it will never happen under the FijiFirst government.

Fiji family laws do not provide legal recognition of same-sex marriage or civil unions.

Since 2002, the law has openly banned same-sex marriage.

Earlier in 2013, Bainimarama expressed opposition to the idea of same-sex marriage.
