UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Security Council on Thursday decided to extend the mandate of the UN Verification Mission in Colombia by one year till Sept. 25, 2019.

The mission, which was established by the Security Council in July 2017 to oversee the second phase of a peace deal between the Colombian government and the rebel Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), became operational on Sept. 26, 2017.

The mission is responsible for the verification of the reintegration of rebel fighters into political, economic and social life; personal and collective security guarantees; and comprehensive programs on security and protection measures for communities and organizations in conflict-affected areas.

Resolution 2435, adopted unanimously by the 15-member Security Council on Thursday, also expressed the council's willingness to further extend the mandate of the Verification Mission on the basis of the Colombian government's agreement with FARC.
