CARACAS, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Venezuela's National Constituent Assembly (ANC) on Monday marked the one-year anniversary of its election.

"July 30, 2017 will go down in history as the day the original constituent power rebelled against the terrorist violence of the opposition," ANC President Diosdado Cabello posted on Twitter, referring to the people's vote.

"The ANC came with the power of the people to impose the peace," Cabello added.

More than 8 million Venezuelans went to the polls to elect the members of the assembly, which served to put an end to more than three months of often deadly anti-government protests.

Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro promoted the creation of the assembly as a way to overcome the power deadlock between the ruling socialist party (PSUV) and the right-wing opposition, which has a controlling majority in congress.

The ANC has since embarked on new legislation to bolster the economy and other sectors.

In a Twitter post, Maduro described the election of the ANC as one of "the most important democratic processes of the revolution."

In mid-April 2017, Venezuela's right-wing opposition groups launched a new wave of protests designed to pressure the government to hold early presidential elections in a bid to oust Maduro. The demonstrations were marked by violence and vandalism.

A public rally in support of the ANC was set to take place later in the day at central Bolivar Plaza in Caracas.

"We are going to commemorate the heroic gesture of the Venezuelan people on July 30 of last year," ANC Vice President Tania Diaz said.
