MADRID, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Spanish social organizations and political groups on Thursday unveiled a civil initiative aimed at sending humanitarian aid to Cuba, highlighting the island's energy shortages and broader humanitarian needs.
The project, named "Madrid Rumbo a Cuba (Madrid to Cuba)," plans to send photovoltaic equipment intended for healthcare institutions in Cuba, organizers said at a presentation outside the Congress of Deputies in Madrid.
The initiative is backed by several Spanish social organizations, including Ecologists in Action and Open Arms, as well as political groups such as the Communist Party of Spain and other left-wing parties.
The organizers said the maritime journey is intended to raise awareness of Cuba's current situation. They emphasized the importance of ensuring access to energy and healthcare, and called for greater international attention to humanitarian challenges facing the Cuban population.
The flotilla carrying the aid is scheduled to depart in May, subject to weather and logistical conditions, the organizers added. ■
