UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday condemned the "terrorist attack" in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi that killed at least six people, his spokesman said in a statement.

Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman, said Guterres is following developments closely and extends his condolences to the families of the victims and wishes those injured a swift recovery.

The UN chief expresses his solidarity with the people and government of Kenya, Dujarric added.

Earlier Tuesday, al-Shabab fighters struck an upmarket hotel and office complex in Nairobi, killing at least six people and injuring several others.

The attackers were armed with rifles and grenades. Huge explosions followed by gun shots rent the air as they stormed the complex.

UN General Assembly President Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces also condemned the attack, expressing solidarity with the victims and their families as well as with the government and the people of Kenya.

"There is no justification for using terror and violence against innocent people," she said through her spokeswoman Monica Grayley.
