WASHINGTON, July 14 (Xinhua) -- A newly-purchased, 300,000-U.S.-dollar sports car was totaled Saturday after hitting a tree in U.S. state of Virginia, said police.

"Purchased Friday. Totaled Saturday." Fairfax County Police tweeted alongside a photo of a badly mangled McLaren 720s sports car leaning up a tree off the side of a two-lane road.

The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Excessive speed was the cause of the crash.
