MEXICO CITY, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Mexican President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Thursday that he will invite U.S. President Donald Trump to his inauguration in December.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference, Lopez Obrador underscored the importance of his country's relations with the United States.

"We are going to invite him. We are neighboring countries, we have economic and trade relations, we have ties of friendship, we care a lot about cooperation for development," he said.

The president-elect added that whether or not Trump shows up at the inauguration "is going to depend on his agenda and on what he decides."

Trump was one of the first international leaders to congratulate Lopez Obrador on election night, soon after his rivals conceded defeat.

"I look very much forward to working with him. There is much to be done that will benefit both the United States and Mexico," he tweeted on Sunday evening.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is scheduled to visit Mexico on July 13. He will meet the president-elect and discuss the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement involving the United States, Canada and Mexico, as well as ways to address the undocumented migrants on the U.S.-Mexican border.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is also among the world leaders invited to witness Lopez Obrador's swearing in.

Lopes Obrador won Sunday's election by 53 percent of the vote. Mexico's National Electoral Institute is expected to make an official announcement on the results of the presidential race and thousands of regional and local posts.
